I need to tell you what Molly did! She is so precious to us. Spoiled, rotten, bossy, stubborn, and precious! My mom has Alzheimer’s Disease. For months Molly and I would go to my parents home everyday to take care of mom. I finally had to move her in with me because dad could not handle her at night anymore.
Molly has this habit that if you get sick she does not leave your side until you are well. She spent five days with my son when he got the flu. She sleeps by your chest or in your face. She will lick you often and nudge you when you are very still, she doesn’t like it when you don’t move much.
Well on March 29th a Monday mom woke up looking very bad, it made me nervous to see how awful she looked. She is constantly walking all over the house, she is very active. Monday after breakfast she lay down on the couch and went to sleep. Molly jumped on the couch curled up by mom’s face and stayed with her all day. I got her awake to eat lunch and Molly sat by her chair. After lunch she went back to sleep on the couch. Molly was in her face again. It was making me afraid because Molly was confirming my fears she was getting sick.
Tuesday the same thing happened! But this time at 11:00 Molly was barking in mom’s face and pawing at her shoulder. She did this for about 10 minutes! It was making me nervous! I managed to wake her but she fell asleep eating her lunch! I took her back to the couch. Molly wouldn’t leave her.
This happened on Wednesday and Thursday. I had made a doc appointment for mom for Thursday afternoon, I could barely wake her. The doc said her blood sugar was very high and he increased her insulin.
Friday morning I was cleaning when around 10:00 Molly ran upstairs and was frantically barking at mom’s bedroom door. I called her to come back down. Sometimes mom will sleep till 11:00 so I wasn’t concerned. She came back down and started barking at me. She ran back upstairs and started barking again. She came back down and bit my foot! So I went upstairs and checked on mom. Molly jumped on the bed grabbed the blanket and started pulling!
She looked fine. I tried to wake her since it was almost eleven. Mom would not wake up! Molly is in her face licking her cheek; I’m gently shaking her shoulder. Nothing happened! I tried for an hour every fifteen minutes. That was it! I checked her blood sugar; she didn’t even jump when I pricked her finger or when I gave her the shot! She always jumps. By now Ernie and Jonathan had come home and Ernie can’t wake her. I had let a whole hour go by. I couldn’t wait any longer. I called 911 and they couldn’t wake her. Ernie had to take Molly and hold her. She wanted to protect mom from all these men.
We ended up going to the hospital and by that evening we found out she had a stroke. Molly is upset that mom is gone. She stayed in the hospital for five days and now is in a nursing home. It’s sad. But Molly she’s my little hero! I probably would have let mom sleep till 11:30 because she looked so peaceful! Thank God for Molly. Sunday we fixed Molly a turkey dinner! She deserved it!
